Men in the U. S. will soon be able to purchase the impotence drug Viagra over the counter, the health and medical information agency FDA announced today.
The agency said that men who have been prescribed Viagra for erectile dysfunction will no longer need to take the drug to see a doctor to get it approved. The drug is not expected to have any effect on patients who do not have erectile dysfunction.
According to the FDA, men who have had an erection problem that causes trouble during sexual activity should be able to get Viagra by prescription. The drug is not intended for use by women and children.
In its news release, FDA said that the drug has been approved for sale at most Walmart pharmacies, but the company did not say how many pills it will sell for each person, including a variety of generic versions.
"While many men experience side effects from using Viagra, we strongly advise you to avoid using the drug and to consult a doctor immediately if you have an erection that lasts longer than 4 hours," said Dr. Scott Gottlieb, director of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. "The Viagra drug will be available without a prescription at most Walgreens pharmacies."

It's not clear whether Viagra will be approved for sale without a prescription, and the drug's side effects have been reported in less than 1% of cases.
"The risk for people with serious cardiovascular problems and/or heart disease is very low, which can be a problem for some men," said Dr. Robert G. Kopple, M. D., director of the Food and Drug Administration's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
"If Viagra is prescribed, the drug should be used only as needed to get the desired effect," Kopple said. "If the effect is not too much, then Viagra may be used."
For men who have erectile dysfunction, the drug can cause dizziness, fainting, chest pain and trouble breathing. If you experience any of these symptoms, you should call your doctor immediately.
